Georgetown Prep Celebrates Black History Month
Powell '71 Confirmed to be Fed Chair
Jerome Powell '71 has been confirmed to be the Chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System (Fed Chair), the head of the central banking system in the nation.
Powell graduated from Georgetown Prep in 1971 and matriculated to Princeton University (1975) before earning a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University in 1979.
Powell comes from a long Georgetown Prep lineage. His father, Jerome Powell '40 (d.), brother, Matthew Powell '73, uncles, John Powell '28 (d.), Austin Powell '31 (d.), Francis Powell '36 (d.), and cousins, John Powell '58, Thomas Powell '62, and Gregory Powell '65, graduated from Prep.
After law school, he worked as an associate for Dillon, Read & Co., an investment bank. In 1990, Powell was confirmed to serve in President George H. W. Bush's administration as an assistant secretary and as undersecretary of the Treasury.
He was a partner at the Carlyle Group for eight years and was a visiting scholar at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C. Powell has been a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors since May 2012.
Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., president of Georgetown Prep, noted, "I would like to commend Jerome Powell, class of 1971, on his confirmation to be the Chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. We are proud to have a son of Georgetown Prep lead our nation's central banking system. On behalf of all of us at Georgetown Prep, we congratulate Jerome on his confirmation and offer our prayers and best wishes to him and his family."

Debate Team Participates in Metrofinals
The Georgetown Prep Debate Team participated in the Metrofinals competition on March 2 and 3. The team's three co-captains, Ayush Pamecha '18, Sanjay Gospodinov '19, and Ryan Frant '19, brought home first, sixth, and eighth place finishes, respectively, at the Washington varsity level of Lincoln-Douglas debate competitions.
These victories put at least two of the team's co-captains in line to represent the local league at Nationals over Memorial Day Weekend.
Congratulations to Ayush, Sanjay, and Ryan on their impressive victories.
Reconciliation Committee Presentation | March 15 at 7:00 p.m.
Last spring, in response to increasing racial polarization nationally and to Pope Francis's call to make reconciliation a top priority for Catholics, Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., Georgetown Prep's president, announced reconciliation as the theme for this school year. He appointed a committee composed of administration, faculty, students and parents to put together a year-long program of education, reflection, and action. The Committee devised a program focused on reconciling the school community with Prep's historical connections to slavery as a means of also entering into dialogue about the current state of race relations at Prep. That program has featured four presentations – two by outside speakers -- to whole school assemblies followed by small group discussions, a student led school-wide conversation on race at Prep, and reflections about reconciliation and race during some of the school-wide weekly Examens. A museum exhibit on Prep and slavery will open in Boland Hall's Southwell Library in April.
On Thursday, March 15, at 7:00 p.m., in the Haas Humanities Building's Figge Theater, Prep will sponsor an evening presentation for alumni and past and present parents to give them a more immediate taste of what has been going on at school during this year of reconciliation. Several students, including Jack Davin '18, President-of-the-Yard, Hakeem Smith '18, President of the Black Student Association, and Will Boggs '18, Co-Editor in Chief of the Little Hoya, will join Dr. Stephen J. Ochs, Lawler Chair of History, in an adaptation of the two presentations they have made to whole school assemblies on the subjects of Prep's connection to the sale in 1838 of the 272 enslaved persons owned by the Society of Jesus in Maryland and to slavery in the everyday life of the school between 1789 and 1840.
A Question/Answer session will follow the presentation, as will refreshments.

Student-Written Production "Shattered Clocks" Debuts Friday
"Shattered Clocks: or, The Absurdist Coterie of Street Urchins and Bourgeois Sycophants, in Revolt," a production written and directed by John Besche '18, will be presented on the Haas Humanities Figge Theatre Stage this week. It is Georgetown Prep's first student-written production in many years.
"A MacBeth-inflected tale of a reluctant presidential candidate and his ambitious wife, Shattered Clocks uses the same weapon - biting, rapid-fire words - to take aim at both the upper middle class and the rebels raised on Apple. This generation's revolution will not be televised - you'll have to follow it on Instagram.
Witness the tango scene learned in three days, the script memorized in two weeks, and the remarkable cohesion of a cast ranging in age from eighth to twelfth grade.
By scene three you'll find yourself thinking, 'I can't believe an eighteen year old wrote this.'"
"It's an exploration of greed, power, and the status quo through language that divides, empowers, and hypnotizes," Besche says. "We live in a world where language is a means to an end. It's an absurd journey for these characters to buy into Virginia Woolf's life story, equivocate through tango, and stick a makeshift landing through the Attica Prison Riots."
Performance dates are Friday at 4:00 p.m., and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Each performance runs about 45 minutes, and admission is free.

Cui '19 Attends Global Health Conference
Yuki Cui '19 recently attended the Harvard College Global Health and Leadership Conference where he was able to learn from several Harvard faculty and fellows about global health and leadership. At the conference, high school students address the injustices facing the world and study inequalities in access, quality, and income, which disparages healthcare. They also learn about areas of global health and how to lead change and innovation in those areas.
"Coming into the conference, I thought I had a good assumption of what 'global health' is, healthcare around the world," Yuki says. "However, I quickly learned that my understanding of global health was very limited and one-dimensional; global health includes and/or relates to other topics such as poverty, nutrition, environment, human rights, and much more. This realization helped me to mature intellectually as well as be more open to growth."
In addition to listening and engaging with global health topics, Yuki also chose to participate in a case study competition to analyze the social, economic, and biological aspects of influenza. Students were assigned teams with people from a different state, and they would work with that individual for the weeks leading up to the conference to write a six-page report. Yuki and his team then presented their analysis to their peers and a panel of judges on Sunday, April 29, winning Honorable Mention.
"My experience at the Global Health Conference reminds me of Prep; like the students and staff of Georgetown Prep, I met a group of highly educated and strongly motivated individuals who are committed to making this world a better place. Likewise, I hope to be a person also committed to doing justice and to grow as a 'man for others.'"

Year of Reconciliation Exhibit Opens May 9
In the spirit of the Year of Reconciliation, Georgetown Prep has opened an exhibit, "Georgetown Prep and Slavery: Endowment of Tears, Hope for Reconciliation," through June 13 in the Robert Southwell, S.J., Library in Boland Hall.
The exhibit, based on documents and illustrations from the Booth Family Center for Special Collections at Georgetown University, the on-line Georgetown Slavery Archive, and the Georgetown Preparatory School Archives, explores the central role that slavery played in establishing, maintaining, and, through the sale of 272 enslaved persons on farms owned by the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus in 1838, rescuing Georgetown College and its largest constituent element, the Preparatory Department. The exhibit focuses on enslaved persons of the same age as current Prep students. It challenges the viewer to consider how best to seek reconciliation with the memory of the enslaved – the coerced benefactors of Georgetown Prep – and with their descendants. A final segment of the exhibit highlights Prep's first African-American students who played a trailblazing role in creating a more open, welcoming, and diverse Prep community.
The exhibit will be open to Alumni and Parents (past and present) on Thursday, May 17 and Thursday, May 31 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The exhibit will be open to the public on Saturday, June 2, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The exhibit is free charge.
To arrange an individual or group visit on another date, please contact Dr. Stephen J. Ochs.

Varsity Golf Wins 2018 Metros, Completes Undefeated Season
The 2018 varsity golf team and Coach Bob Barry won the 2018 Washington Metropolitan Championship (Metros) at PB Dye Golf Club in Ijamsville, Maryland on May 15.
The Hoyas were back eight strokes at the turn before staging a remarkable rally on the final five holes. Prep's comeback was led by Gus Haglund '19's back-nine score of two-under. Haglund shot a 74 for the championship round. Classmate Gary Bullard '19 had an eagle on the final hole to help Prep secure the victory and finished with a round of 75. Nick Foster'18 and Joe Hemsley '21 also shot rounds of 75, while Nick Barros '21 (78) and Keegan Shreves '19 (80) paced the Hoyas.
Prep finished the championship round with a team score of 373. Gonzaga finished in second place with a score of 383 followed by Landon (417).
The Hoyas won the I.A.C. tournament championship on April 24 and finished both the I.A.C. regular season and non-conference schedule with an undefeated record. The undefeated season is the first for Coach Barry in his 35-year coaching career. The last Prep golf team to go undefeated was the 1974 varsity team led by Coach Gus Coupe.
