Rev. William D. Byrne '82 was named the new bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts on October 14.
Pope Francis chose Fr. Byrne to serve as the tenth bishop of the Diocese of Springfield, which serves Catholics in Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire counties in the state of Massachusetts.
Since 2015, Fr. Byrne has served as the pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Potomac, Maryland. He has served the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. in many capacities since his ordination.
Rev. James R. Van Dyke, S.J., Georgetown Prep's President, noted on the Bishop-elect's appointment, "Fr. Byrne has been a wonderful presence across the Archdiocese and particularly in our corner of Montgomery County. I am particularly grateful for his service to and solicitude for Prep and for our students in our sacramental ministries. He will be sorely missed here, but I am happy for the people of Springfield; they are getting a great pastor."
Fr. Byrne will be ordained and installed as the 10th Bishop of Springfield on December 14 at Saint Michael's Cathedral in Springfield.
