It is Georgetown Preparatory School's sad duty to report the passing of Romulus Meekins, longtime member of the School's kitchen staff. Mr. Meekins, 77, passed away on September 26, 2020.

Mr. Meekins worked at Georgetown Prep for more than 40 years. He retired in December 2019 after four decades at his beloved Prep.

Below is Mr. Meekins obituary:

Romulus Meekins, son of the late Anne Catherine Irving, was born March 30, 1943 in Anne Arundel County, MD.

After aging out of the state's foster care system, Romulus, armed with little more than the clothes on his back and a get-up-and-go attitude, began adult life in the work-a-day world with a food service job at Asbury Methodist Home in Gaithersburg, Maryland. It was there that he found his calling and the beginnings of his family-of-choice, including future wife Mary Alice Bowie, whom he married in 1965. The small family of two began their journey together on Dawson Avenue, in the heart of Rockville, and later settled in Potomac's historic Scotland Drive.

Post Asbury and marriage, Romulus gained employment at Georgetown Preparatory School where, notably and with great pride, he delivered over four decades of dedicated service and attendance before retiring in December, 2019 at the age of 76. Rain. Hail. Sleet. Or snow. Except under the worst of circumstances, he rarely missed a day at his beloved "Prep". "Mr. Romie" truly enjoyed the sprawling campus and fast-paced kitchen -- where he thrived -- and loved the students and faculty he served. In his off hours, Romulus was an avid lover of animals. In his younger years, he frequented the Smithsonian's National Zoo. And, in later days, he would often sit in his window seat and enjoy the antics of the various animals -- squirrels, rabbits, deer, and foxes -- that frequented the neighborhood.

Romulus Meekins passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 26, 2020. He was predeceased by Mary Alice, his wife of 40 years in 2009 and, in years prior, by siblings David, Juanita, Robert, and Lorraine. He is survived by his children, Mary Elizabeth Meekins and Raymond Meekins, a sister -- Emma Lee, innumerable extended family members, workmates, and countless friends and acquaintances.

No public service will be held. In lieu of flowers, contributions/donations to the following organizations would be appreciated:

  • National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
  • Dave Thompson Foundation for Adoption
  • Humane Society of the United States

Both Mary and Raymond thank you for your support.

MEMORARE

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Anima Christi

Jesus, may all that is you flow into me. May your body and blood be my food and drink. May your passion and death be my strength and life. Jesus, with you by my side enough has been given. May the shelter I seek be the shadow of your cross. Let me not run from the love that you offer, but hold me safe from the forces of evil. On each of my dyings shed your light and your love. Keep calling to me until that day comes when, with your saints, I may praise you forever. Amen
