The Georgetown Prep team of Level I (first-year Honors Chemistry) students earned 4th place at the University of Maryland Chemathon, a yearly competition for high school students, on Saturday, April 28.
Chemathon participants compete in both lab and paper-based activities. Sophomores Daniel Yuan, Tony Zhai, Grand Kuang, Kyuchan Jeon, and Kevin Li came in first place in the "Weighing by Redox" event (determining the mass of a sample of magnesium by hydrogen gas displacement), second in "Chemysterie" (identifying six unknown substances), and fifth in "Density Dilemma" (the mystery event) and "Reactions in Action" (balancing chemical equations).
Our students competed against 25 teams from across the state of Maryland and participated in 10 events, including four lab competitions, four pencil-and-paper challenges, a poster contest, and a crystal-growing competition.
